These banks stand to be the biggest winners of the Senate's decision on overdraft fees

Image
Overdraft fees are back on the table SolStock/Getty Images The Senate voted to squash a rule limiting bank overdraft fees to $5. The House still needs to vote. Banks collected about $5.8 billion in overdraft fees from consumers in 2023. From JPMorgan to Wells Fargo, see what banks earn in overdraft fees. Bank overdraft fees appear to be back on the table following years of decline — and the largest banks stand to gain the most. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau in December moved to limit the fees banks can charge customers whose accounts dip below their available balances. The CFPB's rule, set to go into effect later this year, would have capped overdraft fees to $5 at banks with at least $10 billion in assets. On Friday, the US Senate voted down the rule, which the industry largely opposed. The House of Representatives is expected to vote on it next week. "We applaud today's Senate passage of the Congressional Review Act resolution nullifying the CFPB...

Florida may abolish property taxes. Here's what they are in every state.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has proposed eliminating the state's property taxes, which account for most school district funding. Joe Raedle/Getty Images Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has proposed eliminating property taxes in the Sunshine State. The move is aimed at reducing financial strain on homeowners who've seen their taxes soar. But the revenue is critical for local government services, including the public school system. Watching your home value soar is a great feeling for many homeowners. Getting hit with a much higher property tax bill as a result, not so much. In Florida, Republican lawmakers are responding to homeowners' uproar over the rising levies, which have surged in recent years as demand for real estate has skyrocketed and prices have followed. Gov. Ron DeSantis recently began pushing to eliminate property taxes in the Sunshine State through a constitutional amendment. Florida homeowners have faced some of the sharpest surges in property taxes in th...

Barclays slashes its S&P 500 target to the lowest among big banks with tariff and growth concerns rising

Image
Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images; Getty; Rebecca Zisser/BI Barclays cut its S&P 500 year-end target to 5,900. It's the lowest target for the benchmark index among major banks. Tariffs could slash earnings per share by over 2%, Barclays said. Barclays slashed its S&P 500 target to the lowest among the major banks, predicting that the index will end the year at 5,900. Before Wednesday, the firm held a 6,600 target but cut its outlook amid deteriorating economic data and tariff disruptions, which have paralyzed markets so far this year. RBC and Goldman Sachs have also downgraded their price targets this month, they expect the S&P to reach 6,200 — implying a record high by year-end. Meanwhile, Citi and HSBC this month downgraded their outlooks of US stocks to "neutral" without slashing price targets. Barclays' outlook suggests that the index has already peaked this year. The 5,900 target would deliver a meager 0.3% gain for the year. "Our ba...

My husband and I met thanks to a wardrobe mishap

Image
The author and her husband have been together for almost 20 years. Courtesy of the author I've always preferred brutal honesty, so I told a total stranger that his fly was down. He bought me a beer and a corndog, but I wasn't looking for a relationship. We've been together for almost 20 years now. "Your fly is down." That's the first thing I ever said to my now-husband. In my defense, even though I didn't know him, he was talking with two other people I did know. Also, I'm the kind of person who wants people to tell me when I have food in my teeth. I prefer brutal honesty over silent embarrassment. He thanked me and offered to buy me a drink for my kindness. "I'd rather have a corndog," I countered. Mortified doesn't begin to describe what I probably should've felt. I had just told a guy his fly was down and that I wanted a corndog as a thank you. But when he offered to buy me both and his eyes lingered on mine, I s...

The CEO of the luxury French retailer Printemps has a bold vision for the newly opened NYC store: 'It's going to be a living entity'

Jean-Marc Bellaiche is the CEO of Printemps. Courtesy of Printemps Printemps, a luxury French retailer, opened a new location in New York City. The launch marks the store's return to the American market. Turning the store into a success will take "hard work," a GlobalData Retail analyst says. A walkthrough at Printemps New York , a new retail venue in Manhattan's Financial District, is different every time you visit — and that's the point. Ambient noise and mood lighting that changes throughout the day are designed to transport you to a playful Parisian apartment that will feel different at 10 a.m. than it does at 7 p.m. Though the space was originally designed to be part of a bank's headquarters, Printemps intends to make it a destination for foodies, fashion moguls, and local residents alike. Printemps , a luxury French retailer, had the grand opening of its new location at One Wall Street in New York City on Friday. The Big Apple venture marks a ...

'Sunrise on the Reaping' by Suzanne Collins is finally out. Here's the best order to read the 5 'Hunger Games' books.

Image
Suzanne Collins just published "Sunrise on the Reaping." Scholastic Suzanne Collins released "Sunrise on the Reaping," a prequel to "The Hunger Games," on Tuesday. Collins has published two prequels to accompany the three books in the beloved series. I wouldn't recommend reading the five "Hunger Games" books chronologically. If you noticed the rustle of pages accompanied by hushed gasps as you walked by your nearest bookstore Tuesday, there's no need to panic. It was probably just the sound of "Hunger Games" fans speed-reading Suzanne Collins' latest novel, "Sunrise on the Reaping." "Sunrise on the Reaping" is the second "Hunger Games" prequel Collins has published, as she released "The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes" in 2020. As Collins expands the world of Panem, newer readers of her works are torn about how to start the series . As a longtime fan of her work, I have tho...

The crypto market just saw one of its biggest regulatory hurdles cleared away

Image
Ripple Nurphoto/ Getty Images Ripple announced that the SEC's lawsuit against the firm is over. Ripple Labs' XRP cryptocurrency spiked over 13% on the news. It is another indicator of shifting regulatory tides for crypto under the Trump administration. The US Securities and Exchange Commission is dropping its case against Ripple, the blockchain firm that fell into regulatory crosshairs over its issuance of the XRP cryptocurrency . The case, brought by the SEC under President Joe Biden, claimed that XRP was an unregistered security. Industry players said that a win by the regulator would have fundamentally reordered the crypto space by defining most tokens as securities under the purview of the SEC and forcing them to comply with the full range of securities laws. Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse announced the news in a video posted Wednesday morning on X, citing that the update marks the end of a chapter in the recent history of the crypto market. "Just over four ...
