I tried Shake Shack's new Clubhouse Pimento Cheese menu. It puts a fun spin on a classic Masters snack.

Image
The Clubhouse Pimento Cheese Burger and the Clubhouse Pimento Cheese Chicken Sandwich. Gabbi Shaw/Business Insider Shake Shack debuted a new menu on March 31: the Clubhouse Pimento Cheese menu. It includes two new sandwiches and a new side for the chain's chicken bites. I tried the new items and left with a new pimento obsession. Little did I know that when I walked into the Shake Shack Innovation Kitchen on a March afternoon, I'd be walking out with a new favorite food: pimento cheese. As a lifelong New Yorker (with a brief interlude in New Orleans, where I somehow missed pimento cheese in favor of other Southern staples), I don't have much experience with this spread (or dip), which is traditionally made with cheese, mayonnaise, and pimento peppers. However, as I learned during my visit to try Shake Shake's new Clubhouse Pimento Cheese menu, it's a huge deal in the Southern US. In fact, it's been called the caviar of the South. We bought a family business for $40,000 and moved to Boise. We are raising our daughter to know it's OK to take risks.

Heather Schoonover and her husband bought a family business for $40,000. Courtesy of Heather Schoonover Heather Schoonover and her husband, Levi, own two businesses and rental properties in Idaho. While it's busy, they say it allows them to spend more time together. She says running a mom-and-pop shop made them interested in trying a franchise. This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Heather Schoonover , owner of Painting With a Twist in Boise. It has been edited for length and clarity. Three years ago, my husband Levi got a call from family. His uncle had died, and the family was preparing to sell his business , which produced trophies and medals. They just wanted to be rid of it and were going to sell it for about $40,000. That was less than the truck we were considering purchasing. And unlike a truck, the business was something we hoped would appreciate in value. So, Levi and I loaded into a half-finished 1957 Airstream trailer and moved seven hours ...

I love Disney with my kids — but going without them is even better in some ways

Image
The author and her husband got married in Disney World. Courtesy of Disney PhotoPass I was able to do a lot less planning and had more room for spontaneity on our kids-free Disney trip. Our priority was food, and our plans revolved around delicious bites and sips. GEO-82: Lounge and dinner at EPCOT's Takumi-Tei were kid-free experiences we would happily repeat. I love visiting Disney World with my kids — seeing that first Mickey hug, the hysterical photos from Tower of Terror, their amazement at the castle lit up by sparkling fireworks. But, I also love visiting kid-free — trips for work, solo trips, with friends, and as a multi-day date with my best friend. My husband and I bundled up for a late January visit and four days of experiences geared toward adults . The Swan Reserve was the perfect resort for cocktails, late nights, and strolls to the parks One of the newest hotels at Walt Disney World, the Swan Reserve is bright, airy, and very kid-friendly. I have 3 teenagers. These are the battles I don't fight with them.

Image
The author has four kids, three of whom are teens. fizkes/Getty Images I've learned not every conflict with my teens is worth the fight. I give them freedom in areas like style, hobbies, and friendships. I focus on guidance and step in only when it truly matters. I had friends warn me that the teen years are no joke. I had no idea what they meant. I have four kids, and currently, three of them are teenagers: 17, 15, and 13. Even though I have almost a decade of experience teaching young adults — most in the 18- to 22-year-old range — parenting my own teens has surprised me in many ways. One thing I've learned is that it's critically important for me to choose my battles as a parent. Not every teen-parent confrontation needs to evolve into conflict. Here are the areas where I do not battle with my teens. My teens can wear what they want, within reason Each kid has their own sense of style , and I'm fine with it. One of my teens went through a phase of w...

TSA workers are getting paid again, but airport chaos isn't going anywhere

Image
Travelers at US airports are experiencing long wait times at TSA checkpoints. Bloomberg/Contributor/Getty Images President Donald Trump ordered Homeland Security to reinstate pay for TSA officers on Friday. It doesn't mean lines will get shorter — or tickets cheaper — anytime soon. Airlines are navigating a confluence of storms, like staffing shortages and rising jet fuel costs. Jetsetting has gotten less glamorous — and that's not expected to change even as President Donald Trump reinstates pay for Transportation Security Administration workers. Trump on Friday directed Homeland Security to start paying TSA workers after Congress failed to agree on a path to end the partial government shutdown and fund the Department of Homeland Security. The DHS said its agents could start seeing paychecks again as soon as Monday, but if you thought that would mean shorter airport security lines, you might want to pack a snack. The airline industry is facing an assembly of probl...

After raising 5 kids, I wasn't prepared for how quiet life would feel. I miss the chaos.

Image
The author raised five kids, and now that they are adults, she misses the chaos. Maria Korneeva/Getty Images I didn't plan to have a big family, but it became the center of my life. I raised my kids mostly on my own after my husband left our family. Now that they're grown and scattered, I miss the chaos of our daily life. I didn't plan to have 5 children. I wasn't even sure I wanted to get married. I envisioned a life modeled after my childhood heroine, Mary Richards, the fictional associate producer at WJM-TV, played by Mary Tyler Moore. Yes, I was the girl who stayed in her dorm room on Saturday nights to watch each episode. That served me well because I did work for several years in television and eventually landed in Hollywood. That's where I met my husband, a recently resettled Cambodian refugee who worked with me on translating a film. We got married a year later, and I got pregnant just about immediately. Of my 5 children, all but 2 were surprises...

The 13 best convertible backpack totes for commuting and travel

Image

Learn more Sally Kaplan, Samantha Crozier/Business Insider The best convertible backpack totes are all about flexibility — something you appreciate the moment your commute gets crowded. I take the subway to work, and anyone who's done the same knows the unspoken rule: backpacks come off during rush hour. It's polite, but it's also awkward and uncomfortable to suddenly wrestle a heavy bag by the handles while trying not to knock into the person next to you. That's where a hybrid backpack-tote earns its keep. Being able to switch from wearing a bag on your back to carrying it over your shoulder or in your hand makes moving through the day noticeably easier. It also simplifies your closet: instead of juggling separate backpacks and totes that only work in certain situations, one well-designed bag can handle it all. In this guide, we break down the best convertible backpack totes for ...

I visited friends in a small town in Maine and found a hidden gem I'd travel to again and again

Image
The author visited Belfast, Maine, and thinks it's a hidden gem destination. Joey Hadden/Business Insider, halbergman/Getty Images In July 2024, I visited Belfast, Maine, a town rich in maritime history and local businesses. Belfast offers a stark contrast to busy urban life and is perfect for city escapes. I think it's an underrated travel destination, and I know I'll be back. If you're planning a New England road trip , don't sleep on Belfast, Maine . When I visited the town in 2024 for the Fourth of July, I expected nothing more than a wholesome, long weekend with my friends to take a break from the hustle and bustle of my life in New York City . I got all that — and more. It was my first time in Maine, and this particular small town, which I'd never heard of before my friends moved there, surprised me with its history, local culture, and dramatic coastal views. After my trip, I've decided that Belfast is a hidden gem for tourists, and I...

Farewell, Sora. You were too beautiful and too stupid for this world.

Image
Sora was too good for this world. Now it's gone. Samuel Boivin/NurPhoto via Getty Images Goodbye, Sora ! I loved you at first — it was so much fun making silly videos of my friends. After a few days, I got bored and moved on. Apparently so did everyone else. Goodnight, sweet Sora. You were a wonderful tool for trolling my friends, but you burned too bright (and used too much compute) to stay around in this harsh world. For a brief moment, I absolutely loved Sora . I loved making silly videos of my friends and me. I loved that I could use my friend's face to put them in ridiculous situations, like falling over while roller-skating at their desk, experiencing gastric distress, or singing in a ska band. I was addicted to making these, churning them out, often starting a new one while waiting for the previous one to render, and sometimes hitting the hourly limit that OpenAI had to impose after some people (oops) were burning through all that free compute. I drained my ph...

TSA lines are so bad at some airports that United and Delta are letting passengers move their flights

Image
Travelers in long lines at Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport on Monday. Nathan Posner/Anadolu via Getty Images Houston and Atlanta airports are warning travelers of four-hour security lines. Delta, United, and Allegiant have waived some fees to give passengers rebooking flexibility. TSA agents have been calling out of work as they aren't being paid due to a government shutdown. Some airlines are waiving change fees for passengers affected by hourslong waits at airport security . Delta Air Lines , United Airlines, and Allegiant have issued advisories giving travelers more flexibility during the ongoing travel chaos. Most airlines eliminated most change fees after the COVID pandemic, but many still charge them for changes to basic fares. Due to a partial government shutdown , TSA agents have been working without pay since February 14. As a result, more of them have been calling out of work. As many as 10% of all TSA agents called out on several days ...

Travelers describe airport chaos as unpaid TSA agents stop showing up: 'The line is coming from all directions'

Image
Passengers had to wait for as long as 75 minutes at JFK on Sunday morning. Courtesy of Jason Ursaner. Many TSA agents are working without pay during the partial government shutdown. Many others have stopped showing up for work. Over 400 have quit since mid-February. The result is long lines at airports. One traveler called their experience at JFK Airport a "complete disaster." One thing became clear to Jason Urasner as he waited over 90 minutes at a TSA checkpoint on Sunday: He was going to miss his flight. "It is actual chaos," Urasner, 40, told Business Insider. "I've never seen anything like it." Urasner had arrived at John F. Kennedy Airport in New York City that morning to board a JetBlue flight to Salt Lake City, but his plans were derailed by what he called a "complete disaster." "There is nobody directing anyone or managing the line. There are a few port authority officers standing around letting people in one by one ...

I used Anthropic's Claude to pick Oscar winners at a party. It made odd mistakes, but still beat everyone else.

Alistair Barr (right) winning the Oscar ballot at a friend's party Alistair Barr/Business Insider A version of this story originally appeared in the BI Tech Memo newsletter. Sign up for the weekly BI Tech Memo newsletter here . I tried something different at my friends' annual Oscars party this year: I outsourced my ballot to Anthropic 's Claude . It beat around the bush at first, so I asked it to just give me the winners. Claude obliged, delivering confident picks across nearly every category. And it worked. I won the pool and walked away with a box of chocolates and bragging rights. Alistair Barr used Anthropic's Claude to make Oscar picks Alistair Barr/Business Insider But here's the twist: Claude didn't even complete the assignment fully. It failed to pick a winner for Casting, a new Oscar category this year. Maybe the model didn't register the addition? And in a couple of other award categories, Claude picked candidates who weren't...
