Image
Home appliances for sale at Lowe's. Dominick Reuter/Business Insider A tough US housing market is weighing on sales of pricey home appliances. Appliance maker Whirlpool slashed guidance in its recent earnings release, citing weak housing market activity. US home sales fell in June to their slowest pace in more than a decade as median home prices soar. The US housing market is tough for buyers, and the slowdown in sales activity means Americans are spending a lot less on big, pricey appliances these days. In its latest earnings, Whirlpool cut its full-year outlook, adjusting annual earnings guidance to $12 a share, down from a range of $13-$15 as sales of big-ticket items slow. Whirlpool's North American major appliance sales fell 5.7% year-over-year, hurting earnings even as the segment's sales in Latin America and Asia grew by 11.3% and 19.7%, respectively. Whirlpool stock is down about 17% year-to-date, and was trading at $100.65 per share on Thursday. CEO Ma...

It came highly recommended by fire safety experts, performed strongly in our tests, and has a 10-year battery life, so you don't have to worry about changing the batteries or incessant chirping every few months. If the X-Sense is unavailable, we also like the First ...

The US housing-market logjam keeps getting worse

Image
John Rodygin/Shutterstock Existing home sales fell in June to nearly to their slowest pace since 2010. The decline comes as home prices notched a record high in the same month. Buyers are likely waiting for interest-rate cuts that would loosen financial conditions. The pace of existing home sales fell close to a record low in June as record-high prices and persistently high mortgage rates turned buyers away. Data from the National Association of Realtors shows that sales slumped 5.4% from May to June, hitting an annualized rate of 3.89 million. That marks the one of the slowest paces since 2010. Adding to the reluctance of buyers was a second straight monthly record for home prices. The median existing-home price surging 4.1% year-to-year to $426,900. The two dynamics are combining to worsen a long-standing logjam in the housing market. While the issue was once a lack of inventory, home sales have stayed stagnant even as more units have come available. It's likely buy...
