Dimon said he hoped the US could "get our own act together" amid the US-China trade war. Trump said China "violated" its trade agreement with the US this week. JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon said the United States needs to get its act together on trade — quickly. Dimon discussed the ongoing tension between the United States and China on Friday at the 2025 Reagan National Economic Forum, where he led a fireside chat. When asked what his biggest worry was right now, Dimon pointed to the shifting global geopolitical and economic landscape, including trade. "We have problems and we've got to deal with them," Dimon said before referring to "the enemy within." Addressing the "enemy within," he said, includes fixing how the United States approa...

AI is upending the job market, even at AI companies

Image
The Anthropic logo is displayed on a smartphone screen. Rafael Henrique/SOPA/Getty Images AI's impact is affecting entry-level engineering roles. Anthropic CPO Mike Krieger said the company is focused on hiring more experienced employees instead. Anthropic's CEO, meanwhile, has warned that AI could eliminate 50% of entry-level jobs. Anthropic CPO Mike Krieger , who also cofounded Instagram, says the job market is going to be tough for new grads. Krieger told The New York Times' "Hard Fork" podcast on Friday that Anthropic is focused instead on hiring experienced engineers. He said he still has "some hesitancy" with entry-level workers. To some extent, that's a reflection of Anthropic's internal structure, which doesn't yet support a "really good internship program," Krieger said. Internships have long been the golden ticket to lucrative entry-level tech jobs. But it also shows how AI is upending the labor market, even a...

Inflation is cooling. But stubbornly high housing costs could spark a flare-up and a rate hike by year-end, chief economist warns.

Image
Catherine Falls Commercial/Getty Images The Fed's preferred inflation gauge cooled in April, but prices could heat back up this year. High housing costs will prevent inflation from coming down, says Stifel's chief economist. A rate hike could be in the cards by the end of the year, she predicted. The Federal Reserve's favorite inflation measure, the personal consumption expenditures index, cooled in April, but there's a corner of the economy that may still be a problem for the central bank. Lindsey Piegza, Stifel's chief economist, believes inflationary pressures will pick up in the second half of this year and potentially lead to a rate hike. That's because the still-hot housing market could hobble further progress on inflation, she said. April's PCE reading of 2.1% is the lowest since March 2021, and below consensus estimates of 2.2%. But zooming in, other recent inflation data shows that the housing market isn't seeing the same kind of d...

Drones in Ukraine show the way Western militaries are run is 'outdated,' UK warns

Image

Wolfgang Schwan/Anadolu via Getty Images The war in Ukraine shows that the way Western militaries are run is outdated, a UK minister warned. Drones evolve so fast that "we have to fundamentally challenge our assumptions," Luke Pollard said. He was speaking at a summit of more than 100 drone companies, military officials, and ministers. The war in Ukraine has shown that the way Western militaries are run is "outdated" because of how fast battlefield tech like drones evolves, a defence minister has warned. Luke Pollard, the UK's armed forces minister, said Ukraine's fight against Russia's invasion showed "the way we have run our militaries, the way we have run our defense, is outdated. And that is the case across the NATO alliance." Pollard said that drones had "shifted the tectonic plat...

I'm an international scholarship student at Harvard whose future is up in the air. Trump's visa order is short-sighted.

Image
Harvard student David Gayle, a 29-year-old policy advisor from London and a Kennedy Memorial Trust scholar, is unsure if he can finish his graduate degree. Courtesy of David Gayle The Trump administration suspended Harvard's certificate to enroll foreign students on May 22. International students like David Gayle were left uncertain about their status. A temporary stay is in place, but Gayle, a Kennedy Memorial Trust scholar, says his future is unclear. This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with David Gayle, a 29-year-old policy advisor from London completing a master's degree in public policy at the Harvard Kennedy School. It's been edited for length and clarity. I remember exactly where I was when I saw the news. Finals for my first year in my master's in public policy program had just ended, and I was on a bus going from Boston to New York City. I was excited about a weekend away with my friends and feeling free for the first time in many days. ...

2 reasons BlackRock sees upside ahead for one beaten-down corner of the stock market

Image
Brian van der Brug / Los Angeles Times via Getty Images BlackRock is betting there's upside ahead for renewable and clean energy stocks. Energy demand will make clean energy essential for the US. Risks related to tariffs and policy are priced into the market, the firm said. US clean energy might seem an early victim of policy shifts and funding cuts, but BlackRock says its still a key source of power and an area of the stock market that could rise. Even with renewable power facing heightened scrutiny from the Trump administration, coupled with the erosion of tax benefits in the congressional reconciliation bill, two things should keep investors interested in the space. First, energy demand isn't ebbing , and clean energy will be needed more than ever. "The US likely needs more of all kinds of energy to meet AI's needs ," BlackRock wrote in a note on Tuesday. "Industry projections see US data center electricity consumption rising between 50% and ...
