Samsung’s now making chips designed for cryptocurrency mining

Samsung’s semiconductor business is booming, with the company recently overtaking Intel as the world’s biggest chipmaker . But the South Korean firm is not resting on its laurels, and is currently looking to expand into the buzziest contemporary market for processors: cryptocurrency mining. As reported by TechCrunch , Samsung has confirmed it’s in the process of making hardware specially designed for mining cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum. A spokesperson for the firm told TechCrunch : “Samsung’s foundry business is currently engaged in the manufacturing of cryptocurrency mining chips. Samsung says foldable OLED displays and Bixby will help drive the company’s growth this year in its Q4 earnings report released today. The company said it would adopt innovative technology like foldable OLED screens to further distinguish itself from competitors. Samsung also says it will enter new businesses related to AI and smart devices through an expansion of its much-maligned Bixby voice assistant technology. Phones that unfold into seamless full-screen tablets have been long rumored, with numerous patents filed by different phone manufacturers including LG, Microsoft, and Samsung. Rocket fire from Syria's Afrin kills one in Turkish border town

Thomson Reuters ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Two rockets fired from the Syrian region of Afrin struck the Turkish border town of Reyhanli and killed one person, the state-run Anadolu agency said on Wednesday. Rockets hit two houses and killed one 17-year-old and wounded another person, Anadolu said. The missile attacks were believed to be carried out by members of Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) and Syrian Kurdish fighters, it said. The cryptocurrency boom helped Samsung post a record $50.2 billion profit in 2017 (SSNLF)

David Ramos/Getty Images Samsung posted a record $50.2 billion (£35.4 billion) profit in 2017. The crypto boom has increased demand for chips. The company's mobile division, on the other hand, saw a 3% decline year-over-year, with profits stopping at $2.25 billion (£1.6 billion). The company also announced its first stock split. Samsung Electronics Co Ltd announced on Wednesday its first stock split and said it expects demand for semiconductors to remain strong in 2018, as it posted record annual profit driven by a so-called memory chip "super-cycle." The tech giant's stock split is the latest in a series of moves to bolster shareholder returns, including 5.8 trillion won ($5.4 billion/£3.8 billion) in annual dividends and 9.2 trillion won in share buybacks and cancellations in 2017.
