California Gov. Gavin Newsom brought up what he called "the awkward conversation" around his ex-wife, Kimberly Guilfoyle, during a wide-ranging MSNBC interview.
The Democrat, who has been urging his party to be more aggressive against Republicans, was talking about how some of his close colleagues are Republicans when he brought up Guilfoyle, a former prosecutor and Fox News host who's an advisor to former President Donald Trump and engaged to Donald Trump Jr.
Newsom and Guilfoyle married in 2001 and filed for divorce in 2005. They were together when he was sworn in as mayor of San Francisco in 2004.
MSNBC host Alex Wagner asked Newsom during the interview, which aired Tuesday, if he ever talks to Guilfoyle.
"Nope. Not lately," he said.
Wagner said, "It must be weird for you."
"Yeah, Of course," Newsom replied, but he added that he had a different relationship during his governorship with Trump, as well.
"We had an interesting not-as-combative relationship," he said. "Even though we went at it on a lot of issues. We also found ways to get along."
Newsom married documentary filmmaker Jennifer Siebel Newsom in 2008 and they have four children.
